Bridge Number as a Method of Determining the Total Name Number

The strongest technique for combining numbers in Chaldean name numerology is not addition, but rather the composition of digits.

Let’s recall: name numbers can be added by first reducing each number to a single digit. If needed, this step can be repeated. For example, in the name number 17, we add the digits 1 and 7 to get 8. In the surname number 38, we add 3+8 to get 11, and then 1+1 to get 2. Finally, we add 8 and 2 together, which gives us 10 as the Total Name Number (TNN).

Another way to calculate the TNN is to keep the numbers as they are and add them directly in a single step. In this case, 17 + 38 = 55.

The Bridge Number, on the other hand, is formed by reducing both the first name and surname each to a single digit. In our example, 17 reduces to 8, and 38 reduces to 2. Then we combine these digits, 8 and 2, into the Bridge Number 82.

In modern numerology, this method was briefly revealed by Cheiro, who in one example combined the numbers 6 and 9 into 69, though in reality this is a very old technique. Today, some Chaldean numerologists are once again using it more frequently.

When calculating the TNN, the other two techniques described above are still active in the background. So, in addition to the Bridge Number 82, the numbers 10 and 55 also exert a weaker influence.

Challenges with the Bridge Number technique:

  • Most Chaldean numerologists do not have reliable interpretations for numbers above 52.
  • The Bridge Number may function somewhat differently than an ordinary number. For instance, a TNN with a Bridge Number 34 from the name 21 and surname 13 is not particularly favorable.

I personally call this number the Bridge Number, to emphasize its role in connecting two numbers into a new entity, like a bridge between them. However, it could also be referred to with other terms, such as:

  • Contact Number, because it represents the contact of two energies that touch and create a new number.
  • Link Number, since the two numbers “link” together into a new entity.
  • Intermediary Number, because it serves as a mediator between two base numbers. It is neither the initial reduction of the name or surname, nor the final single-digit number.
  • Core Expression Number, since it expresses the essence of how two numbers work together within the TNN.

  1. Does numbers in the numerology chart influence the environment or the other way around? Bad numbers attract a bad environment or a a good environment can help mitigate bad numbers?

    1. Hi, Sarah.
That’s a question between practicality and philosophy. 😊 I see it like this: whatever number a person has, if we place them in a pleasant environment, they will feel good there—more relaxed, spontaneous, and content. And if we put ourselves in a dump, we won’t feel as good, even if we have many favorable numbers. So the environment certainly affects how the nature of numbers reacts. The other way around? Unfavorable numbers will attract more unfavorable situations into life. This can, of course, also mean a lower-quality environment.

      1. Welcome back! How does the concept of free will play into this? I got into numerology when I realized my life changed drastically after I changed my name. I used to believe in the concept of free will in a more empowering way (for the lack of a better word), but now when I look back and analyze my old and current numbers, a lot of our choices feel like an illusion.

I also ponder the concept of horrible circumstances in terms of free will and life lessons. From my understanding, a lot of our numbers hold life lessons; an example is being stuck in cycles of abuse from family members. In such a case, my understanding is that said family member(s) react to your energy, and therefore, them abusing you is a result of the energy you hold — an energy that attracts such situations or prompts such life lessons. In this sense, I start questioning the concept of free will and accountability at large. What do you think of this interplay? I’m having a hard time learning when to hold people accountable and when to blame their energy. I’m having a hard time deciding when people are victims of fate or when they’re simply around horrible human beings who decided to use their free will to cause enough harm to change your fate. How much can we blame other people for the impact they had on our life if it’s been profoundly negative?

    1. Hi, Christopher Phillips.

In divination with numbers, we can use different systems. Once we establish a matrix, then through use it begins to interact with us. For example, the Tarot has the Major Arcana, which is compatible with Chaldean numerology. The Minor Arcana, however, was reshaped by the French in the 18th and 19th centuries so that it has no connection with this numerology. Yet it still works, if we believe in its matrix or invite it to cooperate…

Your system is quite different from Chaldean numerology, where 0 represents emptiness and origin, 1 can represent another origin but also unity, as in your system. 2 represents imbalance rather than balance. For 3 and 8, it is the opposite: 3 is expansion, 8 is contraction. 4 is not considered the most stable number, and 7 in Chaldean numerology is also introspection. 6 is receiving attention, and 9 is often masculine, active, physical energy.

Even if divination systems are different, they all work to some extent, because we are the ones activating these matrices. With Chaldean numerology, it is more complex, since it is not a divination technique but a general numerical system that influences people’s lives.

Unfortunately, I don’t have time for further discussion this month, as I will soon be taking a multi-week retreat.

  2. Good afternoon Bostjek,

My name is Glen and I own a little bookstore in the Adelaide Hills of South Australia.

i have a riddle of numerological written by Isidore zablinsky.

i have a copy of Isidore’s 1922 edition of “The magic and science,..” Isidore has written an inscription to the first owner of the book. On the same page in the margin is three numbers written by the same pen that wrote the inscripction . The three numbers are one on to of the other with a line seperating each number like a three layered fraction.

Reading your blog it seems to say you know your subject matter would be an understatement. Where my numerological skills extends to me being able to spell numerology,.. just.

Is this something you would like to have a look at Bost ? If so, I thank you for just that alone. Can you email me and I’ll send some photos through as I would Love to know what this additional provenance of this book means.
