Mantra DȎN or DUN

The mantra DȎN (pronounced DOHN) or DUN (pronounced DOON) has a Baltic or Slavic character. Proto-Slavic *d(v)on-ěti and Baltic *dun– derive from the Indo-European root *dhu̯en-, meaning “to hum, drone, or sound.” Latvian dunêt, Czech dunět, and Slovenian donéti all mean “to resound” or “to reverberate.”

This mantra can represent:

  • Expression, creativity, and manifestation
  • Sound and sound vibration
  • The principle of circulation
  • The principle of condensing subtle energy (prana, qi)
  • The circulation of energy through the energy meridians (nadis)

It can be used during energy-circulation exercises, for example, during the Microcosmic Orbit or any other practice involving the circulation of energy through the nadis. Naturally, specific mantras can also be used for individual meridians if we know them; for example, SHAO and T’AI to stimulate the circulation of energy through the Governing and Conception Vessels.

The Chinese use the mantra DONG (pronounced DOONG) to stimulate the circulation of subtle energy (qi) through the meridians. It has a related, but somewhat less precise, function.
