Auspicious Dates and the (Neo-)Chaldean Numerology of Pandit Sethuraman

The Indian numerologist Pandit Sethuraman often selected numbers for auspicious dates that diverge from the classical Chaldean numerological model. His approach appears to be at least partially based on four key categories:

1) The primary model includes interchangeable number pairs such as 2 & 7, 1 & 4 & 8, 3 & 6, and 5 & 9. Among these, the connection between 1 & 4 is considered stronger than that between 1 & 8 or 4 & 8. This approach originates from Arabic-Persian numerology and was introduced to the West in 1903 by Sheikh Habeeb Ahmad.

2) The dual value of celestial bodies: The Sun has a dual representation in the numbers 1 & 4, while the Moon is represented by 2 & 7.

3) Triangular groupings: a) Positive – 1, 5, 7; b) Negative – 2, 4, 8; c) Positive – 3, 6, 9.

4) Vortex math, which considers number doubling patterns. Reduced values are grouped into three categories: a) 1, 2, 4, 8, 7, 5 (positive – six numbers total, with 6 being a strong and favorable number); b) 3, 6 (negative- two numbers in total, with 2 being weak number and can be interpreted as planetary opposition between Venus and Jupiter), c) 9 (neutral but powerful).

(This system of Vortex math was comprehensively presented by Marko Rodin in the early 21th century, though its roots are much older).

Now, using these criteria alone, let’s attempt to construct a framework to determine which dates may be considered auspicious.

Number 1

The interchangeable group here is 1 & 4, & 8. Numbers 4 and 8 also belong to the triangle 2 & 4 & 8. By the principle of duality, the number series becomes 1, 2, 4, and 8 (following the formula y = 2^n).

  • 1 is strong and luminous.
  • 8 is dark and negative.
  • 4 lies in between.
Thus, the best date choices for 1 are those that correspond to its series: 1, 10, 19, and 28.
Choosing 4 is also acceptable, as it helps complete solar energy cycles—but since it belongs to the negative triangle, it may also bring instability to 1.
8 is too distant and has a negative effect on 1.

Number 2

Here we have the interchangeable pair 2 & 7—both lunar numbers.

  • Through 7, number 2 reaches completeness, making 7 the first choice.
  • 2 is the second.
  • 1 (a strong number) is a tertiary option due to partial interchangeability between the 1 & 4 & 8 and 2 &7 groups.

Number 3

While 3 & 6 form an interchangeable pair, in vortex math this grouping is limited and seen as weak. It symbolizes planetary opposition between Jupiter (3) and Venus (6).

  • The number 9 mediates between them.
  • Thus, auspicious days for 6 should fall on 6 and 9.
  • Relationship with 6 is considered inauspicious for 3.

Number 4

Again, the group here is 1 & 4 & 8.

  • Choosing 1 helps reach completeness (first choice).
  • 4 is neutral and has mixed effects (second choice).
  • 8 is negative and decreases success potential for 4s, so it’s best avoided.

Number 5

The favorable pair is 5 & 9. These are the preferred dates.

Number 6

Even though 3 & 6 are paired, they represent planetary opposition.

  • 9 acts as a bridge, so the favorable days are 6 and 9.
  • The relationship with 3 is generally unfavorable.

Number 7

Belongs to the 2 & 7 group.

  • Completeness is achieved through 2 (first choice), followed by 7.

Number 8

Also belongs to the group 1 & 4 & 8.

  • 1 is the strongest choice.
  • 4 can be selected secondarily but may still cause some disruption.
  • 8 itself is considered inauspicious for choosing dates.

Number 9

Paired with 5 in the 5 & 9 group.

  • Both are suitable, but 5 is preferred since it belongs to the strong, favorable group (1, 3, 5, 6).
Birth NumberFavorable Dates
11 > 4
27 > 2
33, 9
41 > 4
55, 9
66, 9
72 > 7
81 > 4
95 > 9

If we compare this model’s results with Pandit Sethuraman’s actual practices, we see that he did indeed incorporate many of these principles. However, he made slight adjustments for numbers 1 and 7 and even added unique enhancements for 8 and 9. This explanatory model does not account for all of Sethuraman’s corrections or his criteria for inauspicious dates, specially concerning 2, 7, and 9.

It’s important to note that this is not the traditional Chaldean approach, and I personally do not use it. The simplified version of the modern Chaldean tradition generally groups 1, 2, 4, and 7 together, and 3, 6, and 9 together. For instance:

  • Number 1 usually aligns well with dates associated with 2, 4, and 7.
  • Number 3 harmonizes with 6 and 9.
  • Number 5 is said to broadly align with most numbers on the surface, but deeper connections with 3 or 8 are generally considered unfavorable.
  • Number 8 is a special case: it may resonate with either 4 and 8, or with 1, 3, 5, and 6—as long as 6 is not in the form of 15, 69, 78, 87, or 96.

Interestingly, even in ancient traditions, a contrast was noted between numbers 3 and 6, likely as a kind of social commentary—pleasure and feminine charm (6) often clashed with traditional morality (3). So, I recommend some caution when mixing 3 and 6 in date selection. If unsure, look into life history or consider adding number 9 to your analysis to mitigate possible negative effects between 3 and 6.

If you’re interested in learning more about Pandit Sethuraman’s system, I highly recommend his book, Science of Fortune. It includes detailed, practical suggestions for favorable and unfavorable dates for each number. As mentioned, his recommendations may differ slightly from the model presented above. The book is especially intriguing because it presents some numerological concepts in a very different light than most Western numerology books on Chaldean numerology. Ultimately, it’s up to you to extract the best insights from both systems. Wish you the best of luck!

Partnership between numbers 4 and 6

In Chaldean numerology, partnerships between two people are defined as a unique field of compatibility or incompatibility between numbers. This means that a) the relationship between two numbers in a partnership and b) general interaction between two numbers does not necessarily yield the same quality.

Sometimes, of course, this holds true—for example, in the relationship between numbers 2 and 9, where one partner is under the influence of number 2 and the other under the influence of number 9. If someone has the numbers 2 and 9 present in their personal numerology, this is generally incompatible. Similarly, the relationship between a person with a strong number 2 and a person with a strong number 9 can be challenging.

If ancient Chaldean numerology addressed partnerships, the records of such compatibility analyses have not been preserved, or at least I personally do not have access to such information. Some contemporary Chaldean numerologists have proposed specific approaches to understanding number compatibility in partnerships. Inevitably, there are varying interpretations of these compatibilities since this is a relatively new area of research.

The relationship between numbers 4 and 6 in a partnership implies that one partner is under the influence of number 4, while the other is under the influence of number 6. Numerologists have differing views on this connection; some see it as favorable, while others consider it more challenging.

Those who argue for a less favorable interpretation may point to the fact that the two numbers belong to different major groups. Number 4 belongs to the group 1-2-4-7, while number 6 belongs to the group 3-6-9. In personal analyses, the connection between 4 and 6 often creates challenges in partnerships and unusual emotional dynamics. It may bring excessive or karmically conditioned desires for attention and can lead to issues with health or finances.

However, a partnership where one person is influenced by number 4 and the other by number 6 should not be confused with the relationships between numbers in a personal numerology chart. My interpretation of such a relationship leans more positively. Particularly in the case of Total Name Number (TNN) and a Birth Number, the active originality of number 4 tends to align well with the receptive nature of number 6. Such a pairing tends to work more effectively when the partners engage in public spaces or media-related endeavors. Sexual compatibility is typically emphasized in this partnership.

It’s worth noting that the two numbers come from different groups, so occasional challenges may arise. When comparing the Life Path numbers of both partners, the relationship is less favorable than in other contexts, though it still brings more benefits than disadvantages.

This, however, does not hold true when the base number 6 is represented by the number 15 or its higher occurrences (69, 78, 87, and 96, whose digits all reduce to 15). In cases where any key personal numbers reveal such a relationship with 15, caution is advised. In this scenario, the relationship between 4 and 6 can bring significant challenges, trials, heavy karmic burdens, and conflict between partners. Such a couple might be recognizable by eccentric ideas, flamboyant behavior, or washing their dirty linen in public. They may also manipulate their surroundings to achieve selfish goals.

Matching Numbers in Chaldean Numerology and the Confusion of Interpretations

Traditional Chaldean numerology classifies number compatibility into two primary groups. The first group includes the numbers 1, 2, 4, and 7, while the second group consists of 3, 6, 8, and 9. The general principle is that numbers within the same group are compatible with one another but incompatible with numbers from the opposite group. For example, 1 is compatible with 2 but not with 9, while 6 is compatible with 9 but not with 4. The number 5 is considered superficially compatible with all numbers but should ideally avoid the influences of 3 and 8.

However, traditional exceptions to these rules exist. For instance, 8 and 9, though part of the same group, are often incompatible. Similarly, the number 15 is advised to avoid connections with 8, despite 15 reducing to 6, which belongs to the same group as 8. In certain scenarios, 8 may even align with 1. The relationship between 3 and 7 is generally destructive, yet under specific circumstances, it can be positive.

I am often struck by how far some numerologists stray from Chaldean traditions. The older generation of Chaldean numerologists, such as Cheiro, Gerun Moore, and Lloyd Strayhorn, has remained largely faithful to these traditional principles. However, many modern Chaldean numerologists, particularly those emerging after 2000, tend to develop their own systems of number compatibility and incompatibility.

These deviations can sometimes lead to significant confusion. In some instances, numerologists rely entirely on simplified astrological concepts of planetary friendships and enmities. Unfortunately, interpretations of these astrological relationships often vary widely. This approach doesn’t represent classical Chaldean numerology but, at best, a neo-Chaldean variant. I encourage readers to distinguish between traditional Chaldean methods, which are grounded in centuries of practice, and newer innovations that often depart drastically from the original teachings.

For casual numerology enthusiasts, deviations from traditional number-matching practices may not be a major concern, as long as no serious advice—like altering one’s name or surname—is being given. However, when working with a professional numerologist, adherence to proven methods becomes critical. Some teachers assert that if someone unknowingly causes harm through their practices, it does not generate karmic repercussions. Instead, they argue, the individual harmed is simply experiencing events dictated by their own energy patterns. But is such harm truly necessary?

Be cautious with the number 15

People who change names and surnames with the help of Chaldean numerology often pay little attention to the problematic relationship between the number 15 and any number whose digits add up to 4 or 8. The rules for appropriately changing a name or surname are quite complex. Nevertheless, in this article I will point out some of the pitfalls we make with the number 15.

The number 15 is considered a number that can bring success in public communication or performance. It is also associated with art, beauty, and magic. It can symbolize prosperity and fine clothing. For some people, the number 15 bestows physical beauty, though not always. Even when this isn’t the case, most people with the number 15 tend to possess a certain charisma.

Unfortunately, this number has a weak internal structure and is exposed to the action of the numbers 4 and 8. When such relationships between numbers occur, the number 15 very often starts to act negatively. This action is also shown in the Tarot card XV called “The Devil“. Sepharial therefore associated this number with the following themes: “Fate; the inevitable; dangers to the offsprings and struggles in the marriage state; luxury.” According to older traditions, the interaction between the number 15 and numbers 4 or 8 brings about an unbalanced ego, difficult influences, curses, spells, opponents, possible legal issues, depression, blows of fate, and even poverty. Most numerologists associate such a 15 with the danger of being manipulated or others being manipulated by someone with such numbers. This type of 15 is often found among black magicians and advocates of dubious spiritual movements.

Unfortunately, I know quite a few cases where people have changed their name or surname and included the number 15 in their analysis, which was connected with numbers 4 or 8. These individuals did not find happiness in their lives; on the contrary, they faced a series of challenges.

Here are some warnings to bear in mind:

1. If you were born in January (8), February (4 and 8) or August (4; and this is also the 8th month), then the number 15 should not be in the following positions in your numerology chart:

2. It is also not advisable to have the number 15 in these positions if you were born in October and December, and possibly even November, or if you were born in April (4th month).

3. Similarly, it is not advisable to have the number 15 in these positions if you were born on a Saturday (8) or Sunday (4).

4. In a name chart, the number 15 must not come into contact with any number 4 or 8 in a direct vertical or horizontal line:

5. Total name number (TNN), the whole name number, the whole surname number with the value 15 must not meet with the numbers of the birthday, life path and goal number which have the value 4 or 8. Similarly, a total of consonants with a value of 15 must not meet a birthday, life path and secondary goal number with a value of 4 or 8.

6. With TNN, we must check multiple methods for calculating TNN. For example, if your first name is 24 and your surname is 9, the traditional approach of adding them together gives 24 + 9 = 33. The number 15 does not appear here. However, it is present. 24 reduces to 6. 6 + 9 = 15. Similarly, the classical method creates the number 69, which also reduces to 15. Whenever you get the number 15, check whether it is in contact with numbers 4 or 8.

Unfortunately, this is not the whole story. Numbers 4 and 8 can be present in other ways. If you are changing your name or surname and your data includes the number 15, I recommend that you follow general guidelines to prevent your new name from having negative effects.

Can the relationship between the numbers 1 and 4 cause accidents?

In short, the answer is yes, despite them being interchangeable numbers that are strongly connected to each other. The numbers 1 and 4 are fiery and active, and when they come together, they can cause accidents. In addition, the number 4 represents sudden changes or twists, karmic causes, which can increase the chances of accidents.

The chance of accidents is also increased when the numbers with the base digits 1 and 4 are unlucky (for example, the unlucky form of number 13, numbers 22, 31, 28, 64, etc.). The possibility of accidents is also increased when the number 4 is active (for example, when the total name number falls among numbers with base digit 4, and the birth date belongs to base digit 1).

ESSENTIALS OF NUMBER INTERACTIONS

In Chaldean numerology, the interplay between numbers is nearly as crucial as whether a number itself is deemed fortunate or unfavorable. The potency of favorable influence often finds itself notably restrained if, for instance, an individual possesses a fortunate number like 36 or 37 within their names, yet fails to align these numbers with others within their name or date.

Broadly speaking, numbers fall into two principal groups. Numbers from the 1-2-4-7 cluster typically either harmonize amongst themselves or maintain a more neutral stance in certain scenarios. Correspondingly, numbers belonging to the 3-6-8-9 spectrum generally exhibit a natural affinity for one another, save for the complex dynamics between 8 and 9.

At their core, the relationship between the 1-2-4-7 and 3-6-8-9 groups tends to be inherently discordant. While the number 5 may superficially seem compatible with all others, deeper analyses unveil incongruences, particularly with numbers 3 and 8. Moreover, associations with numbers 2 and 4 prove less than ideal for the number 5. The number 5 finds its best understanding in the company of another 5, while also forging strong bonds with 1 and 6. Individuals whose birthdates harbor the numbers 4 and 8 often necessitate a release from their vibrational burdens, a feat achievable through strategic selection of name numbers. Optimal choices include numbers 1 and 5 for 4, and numbers 3 and 6 for 8, while the number 15—although it sums to 6 (1+5=6)—is advised against.
